Golf Digest Ranks Mauna Kea Golf Course

MAUNA KEA RESORT, HI on the Big Island of Hawaii at number 27 in its 2011-12 listing of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses.”

 The Golf Digest list was established in 1866 as the golf game’s oldest ranking and is considered the leading symbol of golf course excellence and integrity with Price Waterhouse Coopers standing behind the calculations.

Shaped out of bare lava by Laurance S. Rockefeller and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., in 1964, the Mauna Kea Golf Course is one of the most sought after golf experiences in the world. In 2009, the course was lovingly renovated from tee-to-green by Rees Jones, son of the original course designer, Robert Trent Jones, Sr.

Mauna Kea Golf Course is recognized as the grand dame of all Hawaii golf courses – a title she will likely never surrender. Her classic elevated greens combine with the prevailing trade winds to put a high value on approach shots that must sit gently and accurately on hearty, often pitched greens.

The famous, par-3 signature third hole requires significant water carry along a dramatic rocky shoreline where nooks and crannies host the surging Pacific Ocean.
