Mauna Kea Resort » About the Resort

Mauna Kea Resort was the vision and dream of the respected hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller. In 1965, he chose a patch of black lava in an inaccessible area at the northernmost end of the Kohala Coast, with two beautiful beaches, to create a work of art that changed the Big Island of Hawaii. Rockefeller envisioned a resort of world-class standards – complete with hotels, golf courses and homes.

The first step was Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. In 1994, the second half of the dream was fulfilled with the opening of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

Steeped in Aloha, the classic elegance of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel perpetuates the true Hawaiian traditions of the islands. The contemporary feel of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is manifested in its bold nature. Working together, these two distinct hotels comprise Mauna Kea Resort and create the ultimate resort experience offering the following:

  • 660 guest rooms and suites
